What is Page Rank

PageRank is one of the methods Google uses to determine a page's relevance or importance. It is only one part of the story when it comes to the Google listing, but the other aspects are discussed elsewhere (and are ever changing) and PageRank is interesting enough to deserve a paper of its own.

Page Rank for high search engine ranking. PageRank can improve your search engine ranking by 60%. It increases the brand, impotence and popularity of your website

As a rule it takes about to weeks for Google or other search engines to index the new version of your web site after it has been optimized and submitted. The sooner we start your web site optimization, the faster you will see the initial results.

6 Ways to Promote your Website for Free

1. Directories

There are plenty of directories out there which will be happy to list your website for free, the two most important being http://www.dmoz.org/ and http://www.yahoo.com/ directory (free for non-commercial sites). You should always look out for specialist directories in your particular industry since these will drive the most targeted traffic.

2. Search Engines

I'm sure you've already thought of this and since this is not a article on Search Engine Optimisation, I want begin to delve into this massive subject. What I will say though is as with directories you should always look out for industry specific search engines to submit your site to.

3. Email Signature

A Signature is basically a short footer which automatically appears at the bottom of every email you send, it's therefore not a bad idea to have it do something useful such as provide a (very) brief description of what you offer and a link to your website.

4. Forum Signature

Again same principal as above. Join a few forums as related to your industry as possible and every time you contribute to a discussion you get free promotion for your website. Just don't spam!

5. Reciprocal Links

Find as many relevant sites to yours as possible (without actually being direct competitors) and politely send them an email requesting to exchange links, it's often a good idea to link to them first as this shows encouragement and speeds things up.

6. Awards

There are many award sites out there, some offer genuine awards, others just want their award logo on your site to promote themselves. How much attention people actually pay to the award logos on websites I don't know, but don't forget that most award sites will also link back to you on their website which is where the free promotion comes in. But remember only well designed, original, sites with good content win (genuine) awards. For a list of award sites visit http://www.awardsites.com/.

Search Engine Optimization Page Factors

The goal of search engine optimization (SEO) is to implement targeted keyword phrases into a website in an effort to reach a high rank on a search engine results page (SERP) for those keyword phrases. Once you know what keywords you want to focus on, the next step is to embed the targeted phrases in your site's pages. Effective techniques for doing this are called page factors optimization.

How Search Engines See Your Site

A web page is divided into many elements; (X)HTML tags, text, embedded objects, external file links, etc. The search engines parse a web page primarily looking at the text.

The text of a web page is divided into different areas, each of which a search engine weighs differently. For example, the text that appears as the title of your browser window is called title text, most text on the page is body text, text in the alt tag of an image is alt text.

The search engines read all these different areas and add your page to their database. When some one does a search, the search engine uses a custom proprietary algorithm to find pages that have the search phrase and rank the pages according to where and in what arrangement the term is present.

Google Page Rank is it relevant to your websites placement

Google Page Rank is a website score that represents how important a websites relevance is in the category of business they represent. Google gets this score from measuring the amount of quality links pointing to your site from other websites with the same relevance. If you have a link to your website from another website with a Google Page Rank of 5 and is relevant to the subject matter your company represents, then Google sees that as a quality link. If you can get your link on a homepage of a high ranking website that is relevant to yours, then you will get a higher score than putting it on a sub page of the site which will usually get a lower Page Rank.

Google usually makes a major Page Rank update every three to four months. Its servers around the globe have to compare there information and the Page Rank is not complete until all of Googles servers have been updated with the new Page Rank scores.

The Page Rank is measured from 1 to ten one being the lowest score and ten being the highest you can have. New sites and sites that have not had any search engine optimization applied to them will have a score of 0. If you use Mozilla Firefox for browsing you can install a new add called SEO Quake. This tool will allow you to see how many links you have in Google and Yahoo. It will show you the sites page rank and when the site was registered. You can do a search in Google for new music for example. The free results will show up with all the link info and page rank score below the text listing. You can compare all the sites for yourself and can make a partial determination that the Google Page Rank is still a large factor is determining your placement for targeted keywords in the free listings.

I currently manage the SEO campaigns for 27 successful websites and have noticed my Google placement on all staying consistent in their positions as Yahoo and MSN positions continue to rise. Google has made several updates on my back link quality and count on each site but I see little movement in the sites placement since April when the last PR update was performed. The page rank is more than just a number and if it is that irrelevant than Google has not made many other major updates on its server since April either.

Just remember, optimize your site for your customers first and for the search engines second. You can get plenty of traffic using the wrong keywords but visitors will see your site is not what they were looking for when they get there. A few quality back links are more relevant than a bunch of non relevant back links. Use common sense and consider what your customers are looking for and what they expect to see when they get to your website.

What Are Search Engines

With 6.6 billion people worldwide using the Internet (according to Internet World Stats) and around 156 million websites to look at, it is essential that these people can search the Internet more accurately for what they are looking for.

A search engine is an information retrieval system that searches for sites based on the words that you designate in your specific search term. Thus minimising the time required to find information you actually require.

Search engines automatically create website listings by using spiders (also called a "crawler" or a "bot") that "crawl" web pages and any corresponding links to other web pages. Search engines then place this collected information into a huge index (sometimes called a "catalog") so that when a search query is requested, the search engines can look through their own index of information in order to find exactly what seachers are looking for. Search engine spiders frequently return to previously crawled websites on a regular basis in order to check for updates or changes.

The Open Directory Project lists 370 search engines available for Internet users. However statistics show that there are only four main search engines. These are Google, Yahoo, Microsoft (MSN) and ASK.

Importance of page rank

Page rank is Google’s measure to determine how important a web page is. Page Rank system is based on the back links. Greater the number of back links to a site greater is page rank of that site. Also if a webpage has good quality links from some websites it can gain high page rank very quickly. Initially Google’s search engine results were highly dependent on the page rank of the site but these days search engines are smart enough. They don’t rely on the page rank completely but it can help you in gaining slightly better rankings.

Can page rank affects search engine rankings? If you have good amount of back links for a particular keyword, your ranking could be high in search results. I wrote in previous paragraph that page rank is dependent on the number of back links, so every link with any anchor text will boost your page rank. But page rank cannot ensure higher rankings for any keyword. For example you can’t get higher rankings for “blue widget” if you have very low back links for that keyword. It doesn’t matter that you have tons of back links for other keywords. These days page rank only shows the total number of links and link strength, it is not related to search rankings.

Archive for Search Personalization

You go to the store, and find the perfect pair of shoes, except that they don’t have them in your size, or in the color that you want.

You shop online, and try to find a pair of pants and a shirt that match, except that it’s hard to tell how they will look together.

Can a search engine help you make shopping easier?

Imagine a different scenerio, now…

You go to a facility to create a 3-dimensional scan of your body which you can then upload to a clothing search engine and recommendation system. Or you enter detailed body measurements into that search and recommendation system.

You create a user profile that details things such as your skin color, eye color, hair style/color, whether or not you wear glasses, and other details about your appearance.

Keywords are basically words and phrases that can describe your website and different pages. Keep keywords on topic and they will greatly help your site when ranked on search engines.

URLs

Page URLs are the first thing that search engines see when they crawl your site. A very easy SEO tip is to include keywords in your URL titles. This will provide even more keys words for the search engines. Your URLs should also be easy for search engines to read.

Meta Tags

Meta tags are information tags that are placed in a web page that are not seen by users. They are intended for search engines and other applications. These are getting less and less important but keywords placed as meta tags will always help.

Title Tags

Mistakes in Web Site Optimization

A lack of targeted keywords and phrases can make or break your site. When a searcher goes to search engine or directory and types in a keyword or keyword phrase that you would like to be found for - but you don't have these particular keywords and phrases on your site - then that searcher will most likely not be able to find you.

What is the difference between SEO and SEM

Seo is search engine optimization and is the process you use in getting your pages to place well on search results. SEM is search engine marketing and involves purchasing advertising space on search result pages. Sponsored listings are SEM. Both are related though! When using Google Adwords, the better you optimize your pages for search, the less you will be paying for your selected keywords in the PPC campaign and the better placment your ads will get.

Seo Interview question , Seo question and answer , Seo job question , Seo interview question , Seo interview answer , Seo simple question , Seo hard

Can you write HTML code by hand?

A. Yes I can. I do use some Macromedia dream wever (or) microsoft front page editor and then modify the code by hand as needed.

Could you briefly explain the PageRank algorithm?

A. In simple terms, Google uses the gross number of inbound links to a page to determine how important the page is. This "pagerank" has little to do with actual search results but can make a difference on user behavior.

Have you created any SEO tools either from scratch or pieced together from others?

A. No, I do make use of many tools already available on the internet as well as SEO programs that I have purchased.

What do you think of PageRank?

A. In relation to SEO projects, it is relatively unimportant but can give an indication of how much work needs to be done in gaining inbound links.

What do you think of using XML sitemaps?

A. I use them. They are an additional tool to help the search engines when they crawl a site. There is no requirement for any sitemap and your pages will get indexed without them if you pay close attention to navigation within your site.

What SEO tools do you regularly use?

A. Keyword analysis tools, keyword density tools, index checking, backlink checking, wordprocessor to check spelling and grammar, HTML validation and others.

Under what circumstances would you look to exclude pages from search engines using robots.txt vs meta robots tag?

A. Usually I would use the robots.txt to keep a search engine from indexing an entire directory on a site. This would often be directories dealing with admin functions or directories that only contain script or image libraries.

What areas do you think are currently the most important in organically ranking a site?

A. Text on page! Search engines utilize text and only text in providing search results. That text is found in many place including the URL and title of your pages as well as the visible text you place on your pages.

Have you ever had something you've written reach the front-page of Digg? Sphinn? Or be Stumbled?

A. Not yet! I am not particularly worried about it but I do try to write in such a way that others would be inticed to submit my articles.

Explain to me what META tags matter in today's world.

A. The most important META tag for SEO is your page description. Search engines do make use of this tag but it does not outweigh the title or visible text. The META keywords tag is not much of a factor in the major search engines but should not be overlooked.

Explain various steps that you would take to optimize a website?

A. 1. Interview website owner or webmaster to get a good grasp of the site's purpose and goals.
2. Perform a keyword analysis to find best performing keywords that should be used for that site and for individual pages of the site
3. Analyze site content to determine usage of relavant keywords and phrases. This includes visible text as well at titles, META tags, and "alt" attributes.
4. Examine site navigation
5. Determine the existence of robots.txt and sitemap and examine those for effectivenes.
6. Make recommendations for changes needed for the site and each individual page.

On Page optimization Techniques and Methods

1. Use text not graphics for your web design. Web pages that are loaded with graphics are not friendly to search engines' crawlers. Search engines classify and rank pages by text, not graphics.

2. Build your web page content around specific key phrases. Your web pages must have specific themes. It would be very difficult to rank high for generic terms. Carefully research and select 2 or 3 word phrases pertaining to your niche to optimize. Don't just optimize your home page. Work on your sub pages. You want as many pages as possible to be indexed and ranked well.

3. Organize your website internal links. You want all your web pages to be crawled and indexed by the search engines. You want to make it easy for crawlers to find your internal pages. It is best to include text links to these pages from your home page, and to cross-link all your web pages.

If your navigational system uses Java-script or images, then you have to add text links at the top or bottom of your web pages to make sure that the crawlers follow all the links. Double-check all your links to verify they are working.

4. Include your key phrases at the following places…

a. URL and file names. The URL and file names are important indicators to search engines. It is good SEO practice to put your key phrases either in your main domain name or in your file names.

b. Title and description tags. Your title text is displayed in the blue line at the top of your browser. It is located in the head section of the html document. Include your key phrase in your title tag.
Description tags are not visible to website visitors. Search engines often display them as text form to give searchers a cursory glance of your web pages is. Your description tags should be compelling to pull in visitors. It should contain your key phrase.

c. Headlines and subheadlines. Place your headlines at the top of your web pages page. Your headline and subheadline texts should be enclosed with special header tags such as h1, h2, h3.

At SEM Web Services we pay due consideration to the shortcomings in design and structure. We are happy –in consultancy with our client- to restructure our clients’ websites in line with the search engine algorythms.

•Coding: Sometimes, despite the on-page optimization, re-designing and search engine friendly measures, all the optimization efforts are in vain. When a site does not even get indexed on Google or any other search engine, the problem often lies with the coding, the use of flash, frames, or Java in the site’s web structure. The coding services at SEM Web Services rectify all of these drawbacks and are of great help for websites, especially sites that are database-driven and dynamically built such as shopping websites and e-commerce sites.

•Content Writing: The content of a website provides the visitor with information about the services and products of the business. The content of a website plays a vital role in the search engine indexing process. Well-optimized, keyword-rich content drives ample traffic towards a website. Besides the traditional, static content, nowadays media files and blogs are also extensively used types of content that generate traffic and rankings in the search engines.

Off-Page-Optimization: An off page optimization process is weaved around the incoming and outgoing links that point to websites with a good page ranking. A website that is supported with good anchor texts and original content is always valued high by Google and other search engines. In an ideal link building program the following methods are involved:

•Link Exchange: We provide a link exchange program that is a very popular and often-used method of increasing the link popularity of a website. This method includes the creation of one way links, back links, reciprocal links and a three way linking process.

Link Baiting: A recent and very popular SEO link-building technique is the placement of a piece of fresh and attractive content on various community websites that invites links with a good PR and thus achieves the best search engine results.

Blog Submission: Thanks to their recurring and new content, blogs are very popular with search engines and are therefore used extensively in the link building process. We provide blog-posting services in which a post that describes your products and services, after it is being posted, is being linked back to your online business page.

•Multi Media Formats: The transmission of the content in Video and Pod casts and supported with links, attracts useful traffic to a website displaying your product and services.

•Article and Press Releases Services: This includes the submission of well planned, conceived and written content on various article sites and online news sites. This method turns a huge chunk of traffic along with pointed links to your website.

•Social Networking: This method is unique in its approach of posting and conferencing from the many social networking websites and thereby enhancing the traffic of your website.

Steps for ranking

1. Get Some Quick Links From Trusted Directories

Link building is a long-term process with long-term goals, but for brand new sites with no history you’ve got to start somewhere. There are a number of directories out there that offer free and paid listings (subject to editorial review, of course). Here are the ones I recommend:
* Yahoo!
* Business.com
* JoeAnt.com
* DMOZ.org
* BOTW.org
* Ah, what the heck - here’s a great list of directories sorted by SEOmoz’s Trifecta score - bookmark it and get started

2. Start Blogging

OK, blogging isn’t for everybody (especially you boring people), but it’s a great way to build relevant content at your site on a consistent basis. It also gives your visitors/customers a way to engage with you. But please don’t make the mistake of being too “corporate” on your blog - do yourself a favor and check your Public Relations cap at the door. Don’t be afraid to discuss your mistakes, missteps you’ve made, and what you’ve learned from them as well as your triumphs. In short, be a human, not a brand.

3. Consider Paid Search

For new websites, the day when you receive all the traffic you need for free from search engines and other referrals is a long way off - if not just a pipe dream altogether. Often times paid search campaigns are a great way to get your site in front of your target market today. Be sure to keep your budget modest, though, until you’re confident in your ROI. Be sure to do your keyword research to find lower-cost “long tail” keywords - going after the big traffic keywords might be tempting, but it gets expensive and the ROI is often not the best.

4. Use Article Marketing To Build Links

As with any tactic, I’d recommend using this one in moderation. Article marketing is, essentially, trading words for links. It can help with link building, but the quality of the links it garners is usually less than stellar.

Here’s how it works:
* Write an informative article on your site topic (or something related)

* Include an “about the author” section as well as links in the article that point to your pages using relevant anchor text

* Submit the article through one of the many article syndication services (such as EZineArticles.com or GoArticles.com )

* The deal is, anybody can come along and publish your article on their website - provided they use the article in its original format including the “about the author” section. So when the article is published, any links you include back to your site are published as well.

5. Guest Post At Relevant Blogs

This certainly requires some up-front investment, mainly in terms of building relationships with bloggers in your topic (a little brown-nosing never hurt), but it can help get the flywheel turning for your site like nothing else can. Take the time to make your guest post remarkable and smart - your host blogger will appreciate it, and it’ll improve the likelihood of attention coming back to your site (which you’ll link to in your guest post, of course). Links from blogs are some of the most powerful editorial links you can get - don’t underestimate them for a second.

6. Submit Your Site to Design Galleries

Is your website breathtaking to behold, beautiful enough to make angels weep? Yeah, sure it is. But seriously, if it looks pretty sharp there are plenty of web design galleries that accept submissions for new sites and link to the sites they feature. Particularly for CSS-driven design there are a number of galleries that will consider your site for listing (provided your site uses CSS for layout/styling - and God help you if it doesn’t) - including CSSElite.com , CSSHeaven.com, CSSBeauty.com and many others. Just search in Google for “CSS design gallery.” Unless your site is ugly- in that case, I can’t help you, and stop asking me to look at it.

7. Sponsor a Local Event or Charity

OK, I admit this is kind of a tired tip - but it works! Especially for local small businesses. Is there a local event coming up in your community? A local charity that has a website? Not only will sponsoring such an event give you all of the normal PR benefits (and self-righteous bragging rights) that are the byproducts of charity, but any web announcement for the event will potentially include a mention of your website as well as a link to it. And you can feel good about yourself for a change.

Reduce the Time it Takes Your Pages to Load

Because search engines hate websites that load slowly, you will be giving yourself a huge boost by selecting a CSS design for your website. Css is a way of keeping the code of a web page light, because the style properties are all kept in one place and don't need to be repeated ad nauseum. This was certainly the case with HTML.

Then, keep pictures as small as you can, while still retaining the desired effect.

Try and hire someone who understands how to optimize your code and tags. Having optimized META tags allows you to tel the search engines how you want to be seen, and which keywords you want to be searched for.

Website code should be as light as possible. The old way of designing in HTML was very heavy: most designs would take ages to load, and this needs to be avoided at all costs. So developers tried to create methods of building web pages that didn't take ages to load, yet gave the results we demanded in terms of good looks and usability.

For a long time, cascading style sheets were cutting edge. They not only allowed for faster production of visually stunning web pages, due to the fact that graphical aspects of design are controlled by one central style sheet, but they meant that code volume could be slashed. Now, most of the pages you see on the web owe at least part of their appearance to CSS, including this one.

Now though, we have several new technologies coming up that promise even more amazing results than CSS. More about those later (keep checking back).
