Image Alt Tags

  • Use the alt tag - every time
  • Be descriptive
  • But don’t use too many words
  • Make sure your alt tag includes your primary keyword
  • Don’t stuff keywords into your alt tag
  • Make sure you put the right alt tags with the right images

Image Search Optimization

As an obvious first step, figure out how images can and should fit into the user experience on your site. This is a non-trivial step. Then, determine how and where you can obtain original images for your site. Image search engines don't like duplicate content any more than web search engines, so you need to obtain your own original images. Once you have this in place, here are the major steps you can take to optimize for image search engines:

  1. Use keywords in the alt tag attribute. This is a critical step, as it is the one best opportunities you have to unambiguously label the image. Bear in mind that there is a huge amount of search volume that includes words like: photo, picture, image, pics, pix, or locations. Regarding the locations, if your image is a picture of a physical location, include some location information in the alt tag attribute.
  2. Note that the title tag attribute is usually ignored. Don't waste your time on it.
  3. Pick a logical file name, that reinforces the keywords. Using hyphens in the file name to isolate the words in the keyword is an OK to thing, just try not to exceed two hyphens. Do not use underscores as a word separator.
  4. Use a descriptive file name, in a similar fashion to the alt tag attribute.
  5. Pay attention to the file extension too. For example, if the image search engine sees a ".jpg" (JPEG) file extension, it's going to assume that the file is a photo.

  6. Basic web page optimization applies too. For example:
    • The title tag of the web page
    • The text nearby the image
    • The overall theme of the content of the page
    • The overall theme of the site (or section of the site)
  7. Also important is to get links to the page with the image on it. This could become an entire link building discussion in itself, but one simple way to do this it to post the pages with images on them to del.icio.us.
  8. Avoid duplicate content on your site. If for example, you have a thumbnail, a medium size image, and a full size image, you don't want these to all be indexed. The best way to handle this is to use robots.txt to prevent the crawler from looking at the versions you don't want indexed (most likely this would be the thumbnail or the full size image).

The SEO Check-list

The most important thing to remember while carrying out search engine optimization is to have a plan, taking an ‘as it happens’ approach to search engine optimization will not only be a risky exploit, but one that makes it impossible for you to manage all the different aspects of SEO. Below is a basic check-list that you should keep in mind before you finish your optimization.

a) Titles, meta tags and various elements

The initial step after isolation of keywords is to make sure your website is correctly formatted and that all the proper elements like H1, H2 etc have been incorporated into each web page on the website. In addition also take care that all images are properly tagged with alt property of the IMG tag. Write out proper meta tags and titles (read the entry on meta tags and various tags for further details).

b) Content

Make sure that all content on the site is well written, is free from typos and if possible has been optimized with the keywords that you are targeting. There should be a balance between the relevance of the content and the keyword density. Especially since LSI, content has become even more important (Read the blog entry on LSI for further details)

c) Links

Categorise the links on your web pages as essential and non essential, the non essential links should ideally have the nofollow property inserted into the , this ensures that the page rank of your website is not lowered. There should be an even distribution of links all over the website.

d) Site map

Ignore the site map at your peril, a site map not only helps in indexing of all your web pages by search engines, but also helps in even distribution of links across the site, a well made site map is essential for any search engine optimization effort.

e) Link Building

The link building process of search engine optimization is vital to the success of any project, there is already a detailed entry on link building on this site, in addition you should also read the blog entry on LSI. All in all, the most vital thing to remember is to keep a realistic approach to link building and not get carried away.

The check-list above is just the bare essentials of search engine optimization, depending on the type of site being optimized and the overall objective, the check-list will vary, however rest assured the basics of the entire process will essentially remain the same.

How to get traffic from search engines?

First, your blog must be indexed by search engines and after that, you must rank at least in the first page (because some Internet users didn't bother to look at the second page) of a SERP while using your targeted keywords. By the way, I looked at your blog's code and I can't find the meta tags for your keywords. I think it would be better if you will put meta tags in your blog.

How to get traffic from other sites?
You can submit your blog in social bookmarking site. If you're looking for social bookmarking site, click here. You can also put your blog's url in your forums signature.

Feed Optimisation Tips

There are plenty of things you can do and should do to optimise your feeds aside from just clicking on a couple of Feedburner “activate” buttons. Some of the things you can do are actually the same things you do to optimise any normal web page including:

  • Using keywords - Use keywords in your channel and feed item titles, anchor text for both internal and external links (be considerate of other people’s SEO efforts!), channel description, and blog posts.
  • Make sure links are working properly - Use full path when linking to ensure that the links are rendered properly.
  • Use H1 and H2 tags - The use of heading tags for channel and feed titles are important in order to emphasise the importance of the titles. However, if you do not insert key terms in the title then you’ll simply be emphasising words you are not optimising for.

Other things you can do to SEO for your feeds that are “feed specific” include:

  • submitting your feeds to appropriate directories
  • offering feeds for different categories - This is especially important if you cover a wide variety of topics. If your site/blog is very specialised you might not need to do this. Note that this is useful not only to subscribers who do not wish to be deluged by blog entries they are not interested in but also to syndicators who are only interested in specific topics.
  • subscribe to your feed - This isn’t a tip to boost the number of subscribers but is important in order for you to always see exactly what your subscribers see when they view your feeds.
  • use MyYahoo and MyMSN - To get your feeds indexed faster and crawled more frequently by the two search engines add your RSS feed on your MyYahoo and MyMSN pages. According to Yahoo if you do this your feed will be indexed approximately within 48 hours! You might as well try this on iGoogle although I don’t know how fast this tactic will get your feed indexed by Google. To add your feed to iGoogle click on Add Stuff, click on Add feed or gadget (at the bottom left sidebar), then paste your feed URL on the box.

Interlinking and SEO

Interlinking is very crucial to your SEO strategy. It means how you link to your inner pages, the web pages residing under your domain. These links could include:

  • Your navigation text links
  • Your breadcrumb links
  • Subject area links
  • Individual page links

You can use all these links to strategically increase your keyword density and improve your search engine rankings.

Navigation links

Some people are dead against using images as your navigation links but if you use the ALT attribute of the image tags and use the right text, it’s same as using the anchor text. But the point is, you can use your navigation to create the right keyword density by using appropriate anchor text. Through your navigation, if you link to your web designing services page by using “Web Designing Services” as your anchor text it is much better than simply using an image without the ALT attribute.

Breadcrumb links

Breadcrumb links are navigation links that appear at the top of the page as your visitor first clicks in a category, then a sub-category and then a link. For example, view this breadcrumb navigation: Web Designing >> Free Web Templates >> Template Name. All the expressions in the above mentioned breadcrumb navigation contain relevant keywords.

Subject area links

Content websites having information on varied subjects can use those subject names as anchor text and increase link-based SEO relevance. For instance a website publishing SEO information can have interlinking as a separate subject and then link to that section from various pages with interlinking as the anchor text.

Individual page links

These are the most important links in terms of interlinking because they directly link to the pages. These can be your main navigation pages being referred to from your inner pages, or some support pages that don’t need a place in the navigation scheme but supply small chunks of information as and when needed.

The interlinking helps the search engine spiders navigate your website and evaluate it in a realistic manner, according to the keywords and phrases you use as anchor texts.

The Future Of SEO

Search engine optimisation has gradually emerged out of the shadow of keyword-spammers and “tweakers” and evolved into a highly specialised field. I think the future of SEO is quite bright with more and more online businesses depending on traffic from other sources. I have purposely not said “traffic from search engines” because although a big chunk of traffic originates from search engine users, social media websites like Digg, StumbleUpon and del.icio.us and blogs are also great sources of relevant, targeted traffic.

That is the reason why search engine optimisation has grown more than “tricking” the search engines. The future focuses of SEO are primarily going to be:

  • Organic optimisation
  • Social media optimisation
  • Increasing link-worthiness
  • Creating standards-compliant websites
  • Publishing relevant content, as often as possible

Organic optimisation

As the SEO market emerges as a potent tool for getting targeted traffic, organic optimisation campaigns are going to gain moment. Organic optimisation means naturally getting a high ranking because of the way your website is built and the kind of content it contains. With mounting paid placement costs organic optimisation is going to be a very lucrative option for both the clients and the SEO experts.

Social media optimisation

Well, you can easily say this is going to be the next big thing after generic SEO. The immense popularity that social media websites like MySpace, Digg, YouTube enjoy is unprecedented. Social media optimisation involves helping others promote your various links. In fact the concept is so hot that the search engines algorithms are already bestowing lots of weight on your website’s social media optimisation.

Increasing link-worthiness

It is also called linkbaiting. The future of the web hinges upon two things: content and how easily it is available. People are hungry for quality content and whoever can produce lots of link-worthy content is going to get lots of SEO mileage in future.

Creating standard compliant websites

The markup has always been a big part of the total SEO effort. Creating standard compliant websites means they are accessible to everybody through multiple devices and multiple browsers. Standard compliant websites makes it easy for the search engine crawlers to crawl your website and index it accordingly. As more and more websites compete with each other for the limited ranking space, compliance with W3C standard will certainly give selected websites an edge.

Publishing relevant content, as often as possible

Well, this is what the search engines are looking for: relevant content. And this is what the search engines will look for, always. Relevant, SEO content eventually is going to rule the roost and I don’t think its demand is ever going to fade.

SEO 101 or How to get your Site on Google’s 1st Page and Keep it there

Visible On Page SEO

Domain name
If it is manageable insert your main keyword in the domain name.

URL
When you create subdirectories or new pages, name them meaningful and insert your keywords. The sooner the keyword is mentioned in the url the better. Here is an example if you would concentrate on the keyword “marketing”:
bad: http:/www.companyname.com/services/
good: http:/www.companyname.com/internet-software-for-marketing/
best: http:/www.companyname.com/marketing-internet-software/

Page Title
Make the page title simple, meaningful and try to insert as many of your keywords as you can. It also matters which words you write first. So try to place your keyword in the beginning of the title.
Do also write unique page titles for every single page!

Heading tags
Use h1, h2, and h3 tags on your site. Make them unique and insert your keywords. Like before, it does matter where the keyword stands. The sooner the better.

Bold text tags
When writing the content use bold text on your keywords!

Other places to use your keywords
Besides the already mentioned places like page title, headings and content you can should put your keywords into site navigational areas (links) and alt tags in pictures.

Non-visible Page SEO

robots.txt & sitemaps
Create a robots.txt and a sitemap for your site!
For further details check these two links: post from Google about robots.txt
and this about sitemaps.

OFF Page SEO

Inbound Links
Get inbound links. The more the better. But wait, do not go crazy and backlink spam! Go for one-way back links from relevant and quality websites. This will boost your Google page rank.

Link Anchor Text
Use short and significant anchor texts for back links. So for example instead of having the link saying “YourCompanyName” try to make it specific like “Internet Marketing”.

More SEO tips - The do’s and do not’s

  • Do not target common keywords like “shop” or “design”
  • Do not copy any content from other pages
  • Add new content from time to time to keep your site on top
  • Monitor and analyze your keywords performance and study your competitor
  • Try to avoid flash and scripts to keep your code clean
  • Use not more than 5 to 7 words for your meta keywords
  • Use unique and relevant meta keywords for every single page
  • Create landing pages, optimized for specific keywords
  • Don’t spam your meta tags with keywords, focus on your main keywords
  • Provide unique and useful content. Seriously, this is crucial!
  • Use text for your navigation and not images
  • Integrate a blog for fresh content and social marketing possibilities
  • Once again, take your time researching the right keywords for your site

Robot text file

What should the robot.txt say?

That depends on what you want it to do.

Most people want robots to visit everything in their website. If this is the case with you, and you want the robot to index all parts of your site, there are three options to let the robots know that they are welcome.

1) Do not have a robot.txt file

If your website does not have a robot.txt file then this is what happens -

A robot comes to visit. It looks for the robot.txt file. It does not find it because it isn't there. The robot then feels free to visit all your web pages and content because this is what it is programmed to do in this situation.

2) Make an empty file and call it robots.txt

If your website has a robot.txt file that has nothing in it then this is what happens -

A robot comes to visit. It looks for the robot.txt file. It finds the file and reads it. There is nothing to read, so the robot then feels free to visit all your web pages and content because this is what it is programmed to do in this situation.

3) Make a file called robots.txt and write the following two lines in it... (these are "instructions" for the robot to follow)
User-agent: *
Disallow:
If your website has a robot.txt with these instructions in it then this is what happens -
A robot comes to visit. It looks for the robot.txt file. It finds the file and reads it. It reads the first line. Then it reads the second line. The robot then feels free to visit all your web pages and content because this is what it is what you told it to do.
What do the robot instructions mean?
Here is an explanation of what the different words mean in a robot.txt file
User-agent:

The "User-agent" part is there to specify directions to a specific robot if needed. There are two ways to use this in your file.

If you want to tell all robots the same thing you put a " * " after the "User-agent" It would look like this...

User-agent: * (This line is saying "these directions apply to all robots")

If you want to tell a specific robot something (in this example Googlebot) it would look like this...

User-agent: Googlebot (this line is saying "these directions apply to just Googlebot")

Disallow:

The "Disallow" part is there to tell the robots what folders they should not look at.

This means that if, for example you do not want search engines to index the photos on your site then you can place those photos into one folder and exclude it.

Lets say that you have put all these photos into a folder called "photos". Now you want to tell search engines not to index that folder.

Here is what your robot.txt file should look like:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /photos

The above two lines of text in your robots.txt file would keep robots from visiting your photos folder. The "User-agent *" part is saying "this applies to all robots". The "Disallow: /photos" part is saying "don't visit or index my photos folder".
Googlebot specific instructions

The robot that Google uses to index their search engine is called Googlebot. It understands a few more instructions than other robots. The instructions it follows are well defined in the Google help pages (see resources below).

In addition to the "User-name" and "Disallow" Googlebot also uses the...
Allow:

The "Allow:" instructions lets you tell a robot that it is okay to see a file in a folder that has been "Disallowed" by other instructions.

To illustrate this, let's take the above example of telling the robot not to visit or index your photos. We put all the photos into one folder called "photos" and we made a robot.txt file that looked like this...

User-agent: *
Disallow: /photos

Now let's say there was a photo called mycar.jpg in that folder that you want Googlebot to index. With the Allow: instruction, we can tell Googlebot to do so, it would look like this...

User-agent: *
Disallow: /photos
Allow: /photos/mycar.jpg

Advantages of a Site map

There are many advantages of a site map as it is useful for your visitors in navigating and finding their related information in a quick and effective fashion. Google Sitemap serves the same function for spiders and bots.

There is a post at SEOchat which lists the number of ways in which the Sitemap can be useful. With Google Sitemaps, bots and spiders can easily find and index your site. Google Sitmap is written in a language that is interpreted by automated trawlers that cover the web for getting the URLs. The language is the Google created Sitemap Protocol. Since Yahoo! and MSN have agreed to support the protocol you can submit Google Sitemap to other search engines too. With it you can tell Google about your website and URLs it has. With Google Sitemaps you can have the information such as the when the pages were updated. This will save the time and bandwidth as the crawler will know that if there has been no update of the page from the last indexing than there is no need for indexing again.

Basic SEO

Basic SEO

1. Insert keywords within the title tag so that search engine robots will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your document within the head tags. Inserting a keyword or key phrase will greatly improve your chances of bringing targeted traffic to your site.

Make sure that the title tag contains text which a human can relate to. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. Treat it like a headline.

2. Use the same keywords as anchor text to link to the page from different pages on your site. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages. The more keywords that link to a specific page the better.

3. Make sure that the text within the title tag is also within the body of the page. It is unwise to have keywords in the title tag which are not contained within the body of the page.

Adding the exact same text for your h1 tag will tell the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have arrived at the page where they intended to visit. Robots like this too because now there is a relation between the title of your page and the headline. Also, sprinkle your keywords throughout your article. The most important keywords can be bolded or colored in red. A good place to do this is once or twice in the body at the top of your article and in the sub-headings.
4.
Do not use the exact same title tag on every page on your website. Search engine robots might determine that all your pages are the same if all your title tags are the same. If this happens, your pages might not get indexed.I always use the headline of my pages as the title tag to help the robots know exactly what my page is about. A good place to insert the headline is within the h1 tag. So the headline is the same as the title tag text.

5.
Do not spam the description or keyword meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were. I just place my headline once within the keywords and description tags.
6.
Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods.

7.
Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.8. Title tags for text links. Insert the title tag within the HTML of your text link to add weight to the link and the page where the link resides. This is like the alt tag for images. My site contains navigation menus on the left and right of the page. The menu consists of links not images. When you hover over the link with your mouse, the title of the link appears. View the source of this page to see how to add this tag to your links.

9.
Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

10.
Submit to the search engines yourself. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site penalized or even banned.Submit only once. There is no need to submit every two weeks. There is no need to submit more than one page. Robots follow links. If your site has a nice link trail, your entire site will get indexed. My site has a nice human friendly link trail which robots follow easily. All my pages get indexed without ever submitting more than the main index page once.

Website Design Tips

1. Avoid Complications: Animations and sounds on your webpage can divert attention of the visitor. Users who have slow dial up connection seldom like websites with these features, because animations and sound increase the loading time of webpage.

2. Use Small Size Pictures: Webpage with pictures is a good idea. But large size pictures increases the load time of webpage. There are numerous graphic software applications available in market which can compress graphics files so that webpage take less time to load on your visitor’s web browser. This will ensure that the visitor gets a fast website to look at and navigate through.

3. Contact information of your website: Your website visitors may want to ask some questions related to your website or goods/services offered on it. So don’t forget to include your contact information or link to it on each page of your website. Make yourself available to the visitors.

4. Check Website Links: Check your website periodically to ensure that it works correctly. If your website contains links to other websites, check it periodically because the target webpage may have been removed or some problem might have cropped up with the web link itself. Also, ensure all links to other web pages of your website are operational at all times.

5. Website Content: Use proper color, text size and fonts for your content. Never use too dark or too light colors. However you can increase the size of text to improve readability. Never underline the text to highlight it because underlined text and links look same and it is difficult for visitor to differentiate between them. Standard fonts used are “Verdana”, “Arial” and “Times New Roman”.

6. Include Navigation: Navigation links on webpage helps user to explore your site. If your webpage is too long never includes navigation links in the bottom because user have to scroll down to get to them.

7. Load Time: One important thing that you should keep in mind while designing your website is its load time. A webpage that loads quickly is always appreciated by the visitor. You can reduce load time by minimizing the use of images and animations. Also, follow HTML and CSS based coding. Avoid using too many scripts on a webpage. They slow it down. Remember – keeping website content (both text and graphics) short, crisp and simple would do wonders for your business website.

8. Browser Compatibility: Check your website performance with different web browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox and Opera. These are the main browsers used worldwide. Your corporate website needs to look and perform same on different browsers. If your website has JavaScript operational on it, there is a good chance that it may behave differently on different browsers. Ask your designer to test it on multiple browsers and weed out any browser compatibility issues.

9. Text link Information: Adjacent to the text link on your webpage, include a brief description about the link or about the webpage it links to. This will helpful to visitor to find what they looking for and will help them to make decision on whether to visit those sites.

e.g. – Best Design Services provides premium quality (web banner ad samples) design services at highly affordable charges.

10. Manage Webpage Width: Maximum width of your webpage should be not more than 770 pixels. This allows visitors having 15” monitor to easily see your webpage without scrolling left to right. Manage the website content in such a way that it does not need to scroll left or right.

How To Optimize dynamic sites

Dynamic websites are often not indexed well by search engines that "crawl" or "spider" websites (as apposed to those based only on manual URL submissions). It is difficult to get dynamic websites properly indexed without the right kind of optimization. (We will discuss this in detail below.)

Many spiders do not read past the "?" in a URL. (The part of the URL that follows the "?" is called the "query string" and is an indicator that the page is generated by a database.) Spiders don't like these characters because dynamic pages can create an "endless loop" or cause them to get "lost" in the database.

One of the biggest problems spiders encounter with dynamic pages is session IDs. If a spider looks at the same page twice, it will see different session IDs and assume it is looking at two different pages. This, more than any other factor, can create an "endless loop" situation.

Recently, some search engines (notably Google) have improved their spiders to be able to index SOME dynamic pages. However, dynamic sites still risk not being indexed to their greatest potential without the right kind of optimization.

KEY POINT: The more pages a site has, the greater chance it has of appearing in results for relevant search terms. But thousands or even millions of pages won't do you any good if the spiders aren't indexing them.

Top 10 Tips to Make Your Web Site A Hit!

Professionals in tend to under-estimate the power of the web to bring them business, and to bring them precisely the kinds of clients they want! And, a few, invest in a great web site, but then don’t market it effectively! There are some wonderful sites that are virtually “hidden” out there on the web. Web marketing has one thing in common with other advertising: no matter how good the ad, it won’t build your business unless lots of people see it.

I tell my clients to view web marketing as having two separate components: first is the creation of a site, and second is marketing it. Building a site requires creativity, design skills, and an understanding of color, images, and popular trends. Marketing a site, on the other hand, is a much more routine, repetitious, even boring task that must be done consistently over time. The following are my Top 10 suggestions for marketing your web site:

1. Hidden Title. This is the first of three critical items that are coded in the “Head” of every web page. It is the first thing a search engine sees at the top of your page. While this title is visible on browsers, most people ignore it. I’ve seen great sites that have no title at all! Use 3-8 words that describe what you do and flag your site for the search engines.

2. Meta Tag: Keywords. The second item in the “Head” of your page should be a hidden Meta tag with 15-25 words to help people find you. These are words people are likely to enter in a search request to find you. An Accountant might have a string that started with: “Accounting, bookkeeping, records, taxes,?.”

3. Meta Tag: Description. The third item in the “Head” is a hidden sentence that describes both your page and your site. Make it vibrant, use as many of your Keywords as possible, and make it accurate. This is a one-sentence description of who you are, what you do, and why people should visit your page. You’ve got 15-20 words. Use them!

4. Visible Title. This is the first thing people will see, and it’s what most people think of as the “title” of their page. Again, you want it to invite people, be accurate, and brief. While a beautiful logo or banner may look nice at the top of your page, remember that 3-5 powerful words will down-load faster. The words in your title will also connect with search engines in a way that your logo can’t.

5. First words on page. The first few seconds as a page down-loads are critical, and a short statement of what you do will down-load faster than most images. First impressions count! And again, search engines can catalog a brief but exciting description of your business, but they won’t catalog your pretty picture!

6. Have multiple pages, each with their own marketing system. A simple way to increase the “hits” on your site is to increase the number of entrance paths. Rather than have one long page, divide it into three pages, each with their own title, meta tags, and descriptions! If your pages are all linked within one site, you vastly increase the opportunities for people to find you.

7. Submit to search tools repeatedly. Search engines constantly up-date and expand their databases. To stay in the game, I suggest you re-submit your site at least once a month and re-submit after every change. Using the web to draw business is an on-going project, not a once and forget it task! There are services that will do this for you (for less than $100), or you can do it yourself. But schedule several hours every month, and do it!

8. Include your web URL on your other advertising. This seems obvious, but lots of people forget. Have your site on your business card, brochures, all of your advertising! If people are interested, want more information, or are just curious, make it easy for them to check you out. Display your URL on everything!

9. Exchange links. One of the best ways to increase traffic, and to target specific audiences, is to trade links with other sites that attract a similar audience. I recommend that you have a page dedicated to “Favorite Links” that have agreed to also put a link to your site on their page. “You scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours” is a great way to build your web marketing impact.

10. Have something of value that changes often. Give your visitors something they can learn, do, or enjoy each time they visit. Let them sign up for your newsletter, post a “Joke of the Day” or a daily quote. It doesn’t have to relate directly to your business. People love parenting tips, humo

3 Ways To Improve Your eCommerce Website

If you run an e-commerce website and you’re looking for simple ways to improve it for both performance and search engine optimization, here are three ways that you can make your site better for users, the search engines, and for you:

1. Tag all photos with an alt tag - Most e-commerce sites have a “bookshelf” with photos and product descriptions. Product descriptions are nice, but make sure that your photos are optimized with alt tags. It’s simple and it will help your optimization efforts in two ways. First, by giving you another keyword in your “under the hood” content. Secondly, you might get found with image search.

2. Create a Google Custom Search Engine - By allowing your users to search your website for things they want and need, you are also gathering information that can help you optimize your website. Google keeps those statistics and you can go back to see what search terms were most searched for from your website. If you find a lot of users searching for items you don’t have you could discover a whole new product line. That’s just one example of a practical benefit to having a custom search engine.

3. Make your site navigation simple - Make things easy to find. Simple to say, hard to do. But necessary.

eCommerce is growing by leaps and bounds. Do yourself a favor and make your website user friendly.

How to make your website load fast

1. Use simple Design: Always go for simple Website Design It is easy to maintain and is quick to load up on visitor’s PC. Complicated design will increase loading time. Use minimum lines of code to develop the webpage.

2. Maximize the use of HTML and CSS: HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is one of the most popular languages used in website design. Use HTML where ever possible to design your web pages. HTML coupled with CSS( Cascading Style Sheet) based coding of your web pages enables your website not only to load and navigate fast but also to be modified easily at a later stage if need be.

3. Use Light Images: A light webpage will load faster. Use only limited images be it text or picture in the image. This allows loading the webpage faster and even helps in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) of the website. It is easy for search engines to comprehend text on a webpage then an image. Use various image compression tools available online to reduce the image size in kilobytes to make it light. Generally a GIF image will be lighter than a JPEG one, but there is a bargain in terms of image quality in such a case.

4. Flash: Use of Flash in web pages may not be a very good idea. It does not stand very good in case you are trying to optimize your website for search engines like Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc. In addition it increases the loading time of webpage. So better option is to try and avoid a Flash website design. If still it is necessary use it within HTML site.

5. Use Tables: Loading time of tables is less because it is just HTML. Tables can be used everywhere it may be your home page, menu or somewhere else. It allows you to code and have a properly aligned design when you use tables in your coding. It definitely scores over frames. All kind of frames should be avoided on a website.

6. Increase Content Section: Content provides information about your services and your products to visitors. If used wisely content can make your webpage load faster. Imaging replacing a heavy image on your webpage which is there just to beautify the web page, with some meaningful content. This allows your website to perform better in search engine searches.

7. Text Link: In some sites you will find that buttons don’t fit properly on webpage. This can be due to size, shape or color of buttons. It is always desirable to use text links in place of graphics buttons. Another benefit of using text links is that you can use them within your text content area on a webpage.

8. Java Script: Main disadvantage of using JavaScript is that it is not supported by some browsers. It is also not search engine friendly and increase the loading time of page. So use it as less as possible. But on the other hand JavaScript is a very powerful tool in web programming and AJAX which is an advanced form of JavaScript is being used widely in web2.0 projects around the world.

9. Check Load time: Periodically check the load time of your website. On internet there are many free sites available where you can check the loading time for your website. This allows you to understand if any change to website has increased or decreased the loading time for your website. These webpage speed tests also provide you with valuable suggestion to improve you website performance.

10. Limit Banner Ads from Affiliate programs: If you have an affiliate website where you are displaying banners of an advertiser for whom you are an affiliate, it can slow down your web page. Reason being, most of the affiliate programs make the banner load from there own web server, making your website load according to their web server response speed. Avoid such banners on your webpage.

Crawling vs. Indexing

Crawling means sucking content without processing the results. Crawlers are rather dumb processes that fetch content supplied by Web servers answering (HTTP) requests of requested URIs, delivering those contents to other processes, e.g. crawling caches or directly to indexers. Crawlers get their URIs from a crawling engine that’s feeded from different sources, including links extracted from previously crawled Web documents, URI submissions, foreign Web indexes, and whatnot.

Indexing means making sense out of the retrieved contents, storing the processing results in a (more or less complex) document index. Link analysis is a way to measure URI importance, popularity, trustworthiness and so on. Link analysis is often just a helper within the indexing process, sometimes the end in itself, but traditionally a task of the indexer, not the crawler (high sophisticated crawling engines do use link data to steer their crawlers, but that has nothing to do with link analysis in document indexes).

A crawler directive like “disallow” in robots.txt can direct crawlers, but means nothing to indexers.

An indexer directive like “noindex” in an HTTP header, an HTML document’s HEAD section, or even a robots.txt file, can direct indexers, but means nothing to crawlers, because the crawlers have to fetch the document in order to enable the indexer to obey those (inline) directives.

So when a Web service offers an indexer directive like to keep particular content out of its index, but doesn’t offer a crawler directive like User-agent: SEOservice Disallow: /, this Web service doesn’t crawl.

That’s not about semantics, that’s about Web standards.

Dynamic site seo

Dynamic sites require highly specialized search engine marketing strategies that differ from those used for static sites. It's still hard to get dynamic sites indexed unless they're properly optimized. While search engines say they now index dynamic sites, and they do, many times it doesn't happen without a little help. And certainly the positioning of pages is another issue altogether.

There are a number of strategies that can be used to convert your dynamic URLs into search engine-friendly URLs. Before we get into that, let's look at how the dynamic databases used by ecommerce sites and other large sites are created, and why they’re hard to index.

What Keeps Dynamic Sites Hidden?

Dynamic pages are created on the fly with technology such as ASP, Cold Fusion, Perl and the like. These pages function well for users who visit the site, but they don't work well for search engine crawlers.

Why? Because dynamically generated pages don't actually exist until a user selects the variable(s) that generate them. A search engine spider can't select variables, so the pages don't get generated -– and can’t be indexed.

The big problem is that crawlers such as Google can't read the entire dynamic database of URLs, which either contain a query string (?) or other database characters (#&*!%) known to be spider traps. Because search crawlers have problems reading deep into a dynamic database, they’ve been programmed to detect and ignore many dynamic URLs.

How Search Engines Work.

There are two types of search engines online. Crawler based and human edited. Both are basically the same thing but it’s the way in which your are indexed or accepted that differs. This can get pretty technical very quickly so I am going to spare the details and give you the information that you need to get by.

Crawler Based
This is how a majority of the search engines work nowadays. They have what is called a spider or bot that they send all over the web to find new and existing web pages so they can keep their records up to date. This process is automated to save time and get the most information back from each web crawl. When a spider is crawling your website, it is looking for changes that you have made to keep your content fresh, this is sometimes referred to as the ‘freshness factor’. Some of the important elements the spiders look for on your site that help to determine where you are placed in the rankings are the title, content and ease of use. Every search engine runs a little different. Google is probably the most complex when it comes to crawling your website

Human Edited
A human edited directory is just what is sounds like. You submit your site to them, they manually review it and other bits of information you give them, including a title, description and a category and they decide whether your site is worthy of being in their index. This process is time consuming so getting listed in a human edited engine take a lot longer and carries a higher likeliness of being denied inclusion. There are hundreds, possibly thousands of human edited search engines out there, one of the more popular, highly relevant ones is called dmoz.org or open directory project.

Both crawler based and human edited search engines have one thing in common. They are both on a quest to give their visitors the best, most relevant search results for the keyword or phrase they are searching. The way they crawl or the criteria they look for is ever changing.

10 free SEO tips

  1. Write more — You can’t have too much content. Not only will it help with your most important keywords, it will also help acquire traffic from the long tail of search.
  2. Write good page titles — A page’s title (the title tag) is one of the most important SEO factors. It should be unique for every page, starting with the best keyword that describes that page.
  3. Use customer-speak — Write using the terms that your customers do. These are usually the keywords they are typing into the search engines to find organizations like yours, so doing so will help your rankings more than will using brand names and your own special lingo.
  4. Write more — Can’t emphasize this enough.
  5. Get links — Encourage / solicit links from other sites to yours. Search engines see these as outside validation of your site’s worthiness.
  6. Link often — Cross link between pages in your site. If a page for Product A talks about its relationship to Product B, make the reference to Product B a link to that page.
  7. Avoid glitz — Over-reliance on Flash and JavaScript, particularly for navigation and splash pages, can prevent search engines from indexing all of your content.
  8. Write more — You might think that having this in here again is cheating our way up to 10, but it really is that important.
  9. Break up long content — Instead of writing really long pages, break up content into easily digestible chunks on different pages with simple navigation between them. A simple rule of thumb is to break up a page wherever you have a subheading. This will generate more pages that better target variations on your main keywords.
  10. Research keywords — Finding the right targets is half the battle. Look at your competitors and use tools like the Google Keyword Tool to find out what your customers are looking for.

Homepage

A homepage is the main page of a website. Like a cover of a book or the front of a store, its function is to welcome people and to inform them of the overall purpose of the website. The homepage offers an index of navigation that organizes content and leads to other parts of the website.

The homepage usually accumulates the most pagerank score since its url is usually where other sites link to the most. The url of a homepage usually ends in a domain name extension such as .com, .org, .edu, etc.

Other terms used to describe a homepage are front page, main web page and webserver directory index.

It’s interesting to note that in some countries such as Japan, Korea and Germany, the term “homepage” usually refers to the whole website, not just the first page.

Even though the home page is designed to be the entry point of the website, people can go directly to other pages within the site without ever seeing the front page.

Why SEO people doing link building? Link building for improve your website ranking in search engine. Link building means to publish our website in specific category of directory and they approve our list means they give one place on there website. Indirectly we get back links from that directory. Directory is any type like article directory, directory sites, Blog directory, and RSS directory. You just need to add your link and fill upping all required information and submit directory form.

In link building all type of submission is included like directory submission, blog submission, rsss submission, article submission, software submission. All submission purpose is same to get back link from relevant websites. Second benefit is to increase your website traffic. When user is come on directory site for example dmoz.org he phrase one keyword like Indian seo sites they shows some site which are approved by this directory and then user open this site and come on your website. It means one hit for your website. That’s the ultimate goal of your all submissions.
Last point but not least is this submission is free or paid. Yes off course all submission all free and paid is your chose which you choose. When you select free open then you are submitting regular link and you will get free back link without any payment.

And paid some directory sites offers paid link submission that time you need to paid some amount according directory cost and submit your link and when submit paid link that time is sure your link will get back link and listing in that directory. But in free submission case there is no assurance to get listed your site in that directory. Directory site is taking time for review your site.

SMO

SOCIAL MEDIA OPTIMISATION (SMO)

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a way to optimize web sites so they would be more easily connected or interlaced with online communities and community websites, also called social media sites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, and incorporating third party community functionality like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos.

We specialise in custom designed Blogs, Forums & RSS. The following links provide more information on each of them:

Blogs
Forums
RSS

For years now, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for websites has been honed into a fine art with entire companies devoting considerable effort to defining best practices and touting the value of SEO for raising a site's performance on organic search listings. While We believe in the power of SEO, there is a new offering we have started providing to clients which we call Social Media Optimization (SMO). The concept behind SMO is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches on custom search engines (such as Technorati), and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs.

1. Increase your linkability - This is the first and most important priority for websites. Many sites are "static" - meaning they are rarely updated and used simply for a storefront. To optimize a site for social media, we need to increase the linkability of the content. Adding a blog is a great step, however there are many other ways such as creating white papers and thought pieces, or even simply aggregating content that exists elsewhere into a useful format.

2. Make tagging and bookmarking easy - Adding content features like quick buttons to "add to del.icio.us" are one way to make the process of tagging pages easier, but we go beyond this, making sure pages include a list of relevant tags, suggested notes for a link (which come up automatically when you go to tag a site), and making sure to tag our pages first on popular social bookmarking sites (including more than just the homepage)

Reward inbound links - Often used as a barometer for success of a blog (as well as a website), inbound links are paramount to rising in search results and overall rankings. To encourage more of them, we need to make it easy and provide clear rewards. From using Permalinks to recreating Similarly, listing recent linking blogs on your site provides the reward of visibility for those who link to you

Google's advice for your website: Content

Google Advice
The web pages actually at the top of Google have only one thing clearly in common: good writing. Don't get so caught up in the usual SEO sacred cows and bugbears, such as PageRank, frames, and JavaScript, that you forget your site's content.

I was recently struck by the fact that the top-ranking web pages on Google are consistently much better written than the vast majority of what is read on the web.

Of course, that shouldn't be a surprise, considering how often officials at Google proclaim the importance of good content. Yet traditional SEO wisdom has little to say about good writing.
Does Google, the world's wealthiest media company, really ignore traditional standards of quality in the publishing world? Does Google, like so many website owners, really get so caught up in the process of the algorithm that it misses the whole point? Apparently not.

Most common on-page website content success features

Updating: Frequent updating of content, at least once every few weeks, and more often, once a week or more.

Spelling and grammar: Few or no errors. No page had more than three misspelled words or four grammatical errors.

Note: spelling and grammar errors were identified by using Microsoft Word's check feature, and then ruling out words marked as mis-spellings that are either proper names or new words that are simply not in the dictionary. Does Google use SpellCheck? Keep in mind that no one really does know what the 100 factors in Google's algorithm are. But whether the mechanism is SpellCheck or a better shot at link popularity thanks to great credibility, or something else entirely, the results remain the same.

Paragraphs: Primarily brief (1-4 sentences). Few or no long blocks of text.

Lists: Both bulleted and numbered form a large part of the text.

Sentence length: Mostly brief (10 words or fewer). Medium-length and long sentences are sprinkled throughout the text rather than clumped together.

Contextual relevance: Text contains numerous terms related to the keyword, as well as stem variations of the keyword.

what is smo

SMO stands for Social Media Optimization. According to my view, SMO is mostly focuing on media promotion while SEO is for ranking sites in Search Engines.

Social Media Optimization : 13 Rules of SMO

1. Increase your linkability : Think blogs, content, aggregation & linkbait.

2. Make tagging and bookmarking easy : Include calls to action for users to tag, bookmark and Digg your stuff. I’d suggest the if you have a Wordpress powered blog.

3. Reward inbound links : List blogs which link back to you via permalinks, trackbacks or recently linking blogs (like the Yahoo & Google blogs do).

4. Help your content travel : Content diversification can lead to mobility of your content beyond the browser.

5. Encourage the mashup : Let others use your content or tools to produce something a bit different or outside of the box with your stuff, even RSS.

6. Be a User Resource, even if it doesn’t help you : Add value and outbound links, even if it doesn’t help in the short term, it will in the long.

7. Reward helpful and valuable users : Give your contributors and readers the recognition they deserve.

8. Participate : Get in there and get involved in the discussions going on among the blogs and sites of others, and do it organically. Earn your rep on Digg.com, don’t try and force it.

9. Know how to target your audience : Understand your appeal and those people you wish to attract.

10. Create content : A little bit of rules 1 & 4 here, but the underlying message is know the form of content working for you.

11. Be real : Transparency pays off and no one likes a fake.

12. Don’t forget your roots, be humble : Sometimes it can be easy to get carried away being a BlogStar or industry talking head. Remember those who helped you along the way, and that respect will help all involved.

13. Don’t be afraid to try new things, stay fresh : Social Media is changing and morphing by the minute, keep up on new tools, products and challenges in your social sphere.

The Beginner’s Guide to Social Media Optimization

There's a great sense of relief when you finally admit to yourself that, though it sounds cool, you have no idea what it means to Digg, Stumble or Spurl. That you spell delicious without random periods and that, in your world, Reddit is two words and not at all spelled like that. As an average Web user, you don't have to be a fan of social media optimization. However, as a site owner, you do need to know that it exists and be aware of the effects and potential benefits it could have on your site.

Social media optimization has become the hot new buzzword over the last 12 months, similar to the way "the long tail" dominated conference speak before that. If you're a frequent blog reader or conference attendee you've probably heard about sites like Wikipedia, Digg, and del.icio.us, but you may not know why getting there could be crucial to the success of your site. Who cares about Furl and Reddit anyway? Well, your customers might. And if they do, being there will keep your brand name in the front of their mind and could send you thousands of new visitors.

What Is Social Media Optimization
If search engine optimization is about breaking down crawling barriers to help the engines fully index your site, social media optimization is about knocking down site walls so content can be easily found, distributed and shared by the community. This process may simply mean embedding a "Digg This" button on your site blog or it may mean spending hours to create a piece of compelling content, aka linkbait, that could either drive thousands of visitors to your site or have no effect at all.

The right link magnet, presented at the right time, to the right audience can bring an unimaginable amount of traffic to your site. For a company just starting out, getting on the front page of Digg can offer instant visibility and credibility. For an establish company, it can strengthen your brand and turn you into a household name. The key to social media is knowing how to leverage it. And your ability to leverage it depends on your ability to attract, engage and convert new visitors.

Reaching out to social communities to bring attention your brand isn't a new concept; however, thanks to today's technology, when done right, the power, effect and benefit of social media optimization is huge. In a recent article entitled Anatomy of a Super Digg, Daniel Tynski shared his company's experience with a client who spent ten minutes creating a throwaway article specifically targeted towards social media. The article was submitted to Digg and in 7 days the client was rewarded with more than 3,000 backlinks, 532 links from del.icio.us, an enormous swell in Alexa rankings, and an impressive (though temporary) surge in rankings for many of the client's targeted keywords.

What's the benefit to SMO?
The benefits of social media vary depending on what you're looking to do. For some sites, the greatest benefit to SMO is the instant exposure and influx of inbound links it creates. With any luck, a significant portion of your new links will be coming from quality sites in your field. However, if not, these effects are often short-lived and traffic alone doesn't equal conversions and increased revenue for most sites. You need to be able to capture those first-time visitors and convert them into loyal site community members.
The real benefit to optimizing your site for social media is it inspires you to create excellent, keyword-rich content, which in turn can help build your online and offline brand, increase quality inbound links over time, make you a subject matter expert, and expose your content to thousands of new visitors. It reinforces what you should be working towards through your search engine optimization campaign.

Getting Started and Establishing Your Goals
As with SEO, most sites can benefit from some form of social media optimization but your strategy needs to be designed to compliment the specifics of your site.
When determining which site/s are right for you, you need to consider the type of site you're trying to market. If you're a technology company with a great blog, submitting posts to Digg may be beneficial for you. However, don't assume Digg is automatically a match simply because it's the only social media site you've heard of. If your Web site specializes in customizable baby apparel, the college-aged, tech savvy crowd at Digg is not your core demographic and your post will be buried. In this scenario, you're probably better of tagging your content at one of the social bookmarking sites or creating a community profile on Flickr.

Disadvantages of SEO

Many companies that offer SEO services will try to suggest everything about SEO is perfect just to get your business. We don't. In truth, there are some disadvantages to SEO.

SEO refers to search engine optimization. It is the art of getting ranked on Google, Yahoo and MSN for the phrases relevant to your site. If you sell bubble bath products on your site, your goal with SEO would be to get ranked in the top 10 for "bubble bath" whenever someone does such a search on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

The biggest disadvantage of SEO has to do with time. There are many factors that go into getting a site ranked. One of them is the age of your site, to wit, time. Google will not rank any new site for six to twelve months. Yahoo is now running similar times. This is why we are hesitant to accept clients that have new sites. You are going to be unhappy paying us for a year just to get ranked on MSN, which doesn't have a lot of traffic.

Time also plays a secondary role in the disadvantages of SEO. Simply put, it takes time to produce results. When we start pushing a site up in the rankings, it can take two to three months to see results for keywords we consider "easy" to get rankings on. For more competitive keywords, it can take much longer. For hugely competitive keywords, such as "travel" with over 1 billion sites competing for rankings, it can take years and years.

A third disadvantage of SEO can best be described as the viability of a certain market. The web is great because it provides us with a bevy of useful information. One such element is the ability to research whether people are search for certain things. Contrary to what you hear in the media and read, not every website should be aggressively marketed on the web. Some businesses just don't translate well. Assume you want to open a general online bookstore, for example. Do you really think you can compete with Amazon? If you are willing to commit to the cost of a 10 year project, we're willing to take it. That being said, you money probably would be better spent elsewhere.
