Disadvantages of SEO

Many companies that offer SEO services will try to suggest everything about SEO is perfect just to get your business. We don't. In truth, there are some disadvantages to SEO.

SEO refers to search engine optimization. It is the art of getting ranked on Google, Yahoo and MSN for the phrases relevant to your site. If you sell bubble bath products on your site, your goal with SEO would be to get ranked in the top 10 for "bubble bath" whenever someone does such a search on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

The biggest disadvantage of SEO has to do with time. There are many factors that go into getting a site ranked. One of them is the age of your site, to wit, time. Google will not rank any new site for six to twelve months. Yahoo is now running similar times. This is why we are hesitant to accept clients that have new sites. You are going to be unhappy paying us for a year just to get ranked on MSN, which doesn't have a lot of traffic.

Time also plays a secondary role in the disadvantages of SEO. Simply put, it takes time to produce results. When we start pushing a site up in the rankings, it can take two to three months to see results for keywords we consider "easy" to get rankings on. For more competitive keywords, it can take much longer. For hugely competitive keywords, such as "travel" with over 1 billion sites competing for rankings, it can take years and years.

A third disadvantage of SEO can best be described as the viability of a certain market. The web is great because it provides us with a bevy of useful information. One such element is the ability to research whether people are search for certain things. Contrary to what you hear in the media and read, not every website should be aggressively marketed on the web. Some businesses just don't translate well. Assume you want to open a general online bookstore, for example. Do you really think you can compete with Amazon? If you are willing to commit to the cost of a 10 year project, we're willing to take it. That being said, you money probably would be better spent elsewhere.
