Importance of page rank

Page rank is Google’s measure to determine how important a web page is. Page Rank system is based on the back links. Greater the number of back links to a site greater is page rank of that site. Also if a webpage has good quality links from some websites it can gain high page rank very quickly. Initially Google’s search engine results were highly dependent on the page rank of the site but these days search engines are smart enough. They don’t rely on the page rank completely but it can help you in gaining slightly better rankings.

Can page rank affects search engine rankings? If you have good amount of back links for a particular keyword, your ranking could be high in search results. I wrote in previous paragraph that page rank is dependent on the number of back links, so every link with any anchor text will boost your page rank. But page rank cannot ensure higher rankings for any keyword. For example you can’t get higher rankings for “blue widget” if you have very low back links for that keyword. It doesn’t matter that you have tons of back links for other keywords. These days page rank only shows the total number of links and link strength, it is not related to search rankings.
